A promising start against Angers [1- 1]
Girondins held to a draw in first pre-season friendly
PRéPARATION - Saturday, July 25, 2020 - 20:12
In the first pre-season friendly, and first full game in over 4 months, the Girondins put in a solid performance against Angers. Laurent Koscielny scored the Girondins' only goal late on, with Angers snatching an equaliser in the final minute.
This pre-season friendly finally burst into life in the last quarter of an hour, as the Girondins played their first full game of the 2020-2021 campaign straight off the back of an intensive week in Dinard.
Laurent Koscielny scored the first goal of the game in the 73rd minute, Nicolas De Préville floated in a corner which captain Koscielny coolly slotted past Paul Bernardoni in the Angers goal (0-1). SCO refused to take it lying down, and Mouaddib levelled the scores in the dying second.
The Girondins had looked strong throughout this, their first game of the post-Covid age. The large crowd respected the new rules of the game admirably - masks, social distancing and lashings of hand sanitiser are the new must-have accessories for the avid football fan. On the pitch, meanwhile, things were a lot more heated: Mehdi Zerkane (58') and Toma Basic (69') both came close to scoring.
Youssouf Sabaly also pulled off two dramatic tackles to keep Bordeaux in the game (60' and 65'). Paulo Sousa fielded an entirely different team for each half, changing all 11players at half time. The first-half eleven looked pretty good too, with Hwang Ui-Jo and Josh Maja both creating chances (28' and 45'). Benoît Costil also pulled off an excellent save to stop Bahoken (26'). Angers had their best moments from counter-attacks, but the Girondins never really looked to be in trouble.
In the end, a 1-1 draw was a fair result. The Girondins looked lively and well-drilled for this stage of their pre-season preparations, and above all... what a pleasure to watch a live game of football again!!!!!!
